“Kristie Chiyere Osi Shackelford’s costumes speak volumes, from the colorfully shabby island-wear of the denizens of Port-au-Prince to Micaela’s tasteful blue dress. Shackelford traces the evolution of Carmen’s character via her wardrobe, transitioning from a revealing peasant blouse and skirt to a Jackie Kennedy-style suit. Escamillo, in a fedora and three-piece suit, is described in the plot summary as the head of the Macoute, but as organizer of illegal fights, he is given the honorific “toreador.” (This is, admittedly, a stretch and it doesn’t keep the final scene with the bullfight from being unclear.) The wittiest costume is Remendado’s decade-behind-the-times attempt to look cool as a 1950s greaser, complete with ducktail.”

“ Kristie Shackleford's costume design also hits the right notes down to the shoes that cause friction between two of the men.”
